Yesterday in our post we asked you to guess which Lee & Low book has been challenged. The answer?
Baseball Saved Us, by Ken Mochizuki and illustrated by Dom Lee
This honest story of life in the Japanese internment camps was the first book ever published by Lee & Low, and was one of the first picture books ever released about the Japanese internment camps, a darker time in American History.
Despite the challenge, it was well received by readers and is now on the Cooperative Children’s Book Center list of 50 multicultural books every child should read.
Happy Banned Books week, everyone!
Damn, that’s *&%$#! Why was it banned? I just used this book cover as an example to show someone yesterday.
I can’t even fathom why this might be challenged. I’ve been using in my teaching since shortly after it was first published. My old worn copy sits beside me on a shelf near where I write.
